BACKYARD ENTERTAINMENT: A Year-Round Pursuit in the New York Hudson Valley
Residents of the New York Hudson Valley have something wonderful in common: an area rich in breathtaking scenery, pristine country air, a plethora of wildlife and birds, and a climate suitable to growing an astonishing array of beautiful trees, shrubs and flowers.
With all of this, it’s hard to imagine that we would need more! Yet, anyone with a home surrounded by even the smallest expanse of property desires to have all of this right in their own backyard. What makes the backyard such a magnet for pleasure? For one thing, it’s our own private space whether created by fencing, plantings or other naturally occurring screens. And in this private space, we desire to have everything we need to enjoy the outdoors in the same way we enjoy the interior of our home. This includes a place to prepare delicious food, a place to give our children and families the fun of an exotic vacation, as well as the joys of beautiful blooms within a seasonally changing landscape.
Home ownership is comprised of a diverse cross-section of the population. It can range from a single individual to a large family. Within this group, there can be young working couples, middle-aged parents and older retirees, to name a few of the sub-groups. Because each of these categories can define a unique lifestyle, landscapers have to be sensitive to the differences in backyard visions.
For the middle-aged parents of a growing family, some with fairly substantial resources from professional livelihoods, the backyard needs to be an oasis of entertainment all year long. Parties for young children, graduating students, anniversaries and holidays require ample space, attractive surroundings and ease of maintenance. Younger people probably need to establish the groundwork of a future grand plan to accommodate the coming stages of life which will demand a variety of luxuries. For the retired population, the backyard can often be a source of daily activity which includes the challenges of gardening and horticultural pursuits in concert with occasional visits from married children and rambunctious grandchildren.
The common theme running through each of these situations is the need for the cleanliness of an expansive patio which limits infestations and controls outdoor comfort. When professionally built, the patio is the foundation around which we add inground pools, upon which we construct outdoor kitchens and under which we provide for the multitude of utilities necessary for lighting, cooking and availability of water. In addition, the patio is frequently connected by walkways and staircases, which all offer the opportunity for planting enhancements, seating structures, walls and extensive gardens allowed by the scope of the site.
Some residents prefer sheltered backyard areas with the help of pergolas, cabanas or gazebos of various sizes. This type of arrangement dismisses the interruption a sudden downpour can deliver. Others choose simplicity, opting for open-air fire pits, small water features and container gardens. Whatever fits your vision, a talented landscaper can assess your property potential and provide a comprehensive plan that incorporates everything needed for the long-term mecca of entertainment you desire, complete with birds and butterflies!
